30 blocks.................... from Exuberant Color

The last 5 blocks are finished now for a total of 30.  I decided on a layout of 5 across and 6 down.  One empty project box.

Directions for this block are on Lynn's blog.  She has lots of directions for quilts made with solids and prints and I have 2 finished quilts and 2 tops already made and one more in progress from her blog.

I'm trying to made smaller quilts this year so I can have a little fun with each pattern I choose instead of spending a month on just one quilt.  I have plenty ...

Searching through fabric............. from Exuberant Color

I was looking for blue and turquoise but a purple sneaked in there.  I matched these with the solid colors for the Shoo Fly blocks.  I decided to search through Kaffe Fassett books last night instead of cutting the pieces for the blocks.

I changed to a lighter color thread on my machine and sewed 2 light green blocks yesterday morning.  The one on the right doesn't look that yellow in person but it is a yellow-green.

Back to searching through Kaffe books: I was looking for repeats of layouts.  He revisits older layouts many times in his books ...

More shoo fly blocks............... from Exuberant Color

Since I had this project out I decided to make some more blocks yesterday.  Bottom left, bottom row was made Tuesday night.  I had one more block cut out but need to change to a lighter thread on the machine.  These could all use the dark brown thread still there from the last binding I sewed.

This is the variety in the first 17 blocks.  So now I have 23 blocks and I want this to be a small quilt so a  maximum of 36 blocks.  I think I need a few blue and turquoise blocks next.

I was gifted ...

Yearly recap for 2023................ from Exuberant Color

I had 30 finishes in 2023.

My goal was to have an average of 2 finished quilts each month = 24.  One month I only had one but I caught up with 3 the next month.  When I got to December I had 4 quilts to finish before Christmas so I knew I was going to exceed my goal of 2.  I also had 2 that were just waiting for binding.  I ended up the month with 2 small colorwash wallhangings for a total of 8 which boosted the year total to 30.

I didn't have a chance of reducing ...

Shopping and sewing.............. from Exuberant Color

I couldn't ignore the empty refrigerator any longer and did my grocery shopping for the week.

Then I sewed the last 4 blocks and at that point realized I only needed 3 because I had one block by the sewing machine to give me a visual aid for the direction of the solid color triangles.

Later in the afternoon I worked on the layout....and this is the final layout.

Last night I clipped and numbered the rows and started sewing it all together.  I have all seams sewn one direction (webbed) and 2 seams sewn the other direction ...

Opening a can of worms.............. from Exuberant Color

I have several shelf units in the basement and I had this grand idea of moving 2 of them upstairs to my bedroom which is has a lot of empty space along one wall.  Then I would place all of my favorite fabrics up there and not have to go to the basement when "shopping" for my next project.........but the shelf units are so heavy and most everyone I know has a bad back......so I now have areas that I moved the fabric out of in the basement (to empty the shelves) and because of that I need ...

Why did it take so long?............ from Exuberant Color

I sewed the center part of this quilt top in 2011 when I had just purchased my Accuquilt Studio die cutter and the Bear Paw die.  I cut lots of scraps of Kaffe collective fabrics and yardage of Kona snow fabric.  This photo shows it with a 2.5" Kona snow border sewn on several years after the center was sewn.  I wanted to add another border but there was the slightest wobble in the 2 side borders and I knew I had to take them off, remeasure, trim and sew them back on. It took me many years to ...

Easy Sewing........... from Exuberant Color

I was looking for something easy to sew last night.  Easy...as in already cut and laying on my sewing cabinet.  This is the third of the remaining solids with prints quilts that I'm working on. This Shoo Fly block finishes at 7.5" x 9.5".  I have 11 blocks already sewn in a box in the basement and I haven't figured out how many I need yet.  This will be another small throw quilt.  I haven't pressed these blocks yet but I should have to warm up.  It's 65 degrees inside my house (warming ...

The stars................. from Exuberant Color

It's time to view the 30 star blocks together on the design wall.  They are part of the solids with prints series inspired by Lynn's quilt.

I can see I need a lot more medium and dark blocks.  I have all of the solid triangles cut.  I just need to find and cut the prints.

You 'll have to take my word for it that there is a female goldfinch on one of the lowest Coneflowers in the photo.  The Coneflowers are pretty sad looking at this part of their season.  They started drying up early while we ...

6 more blocks............ from Exuberant Color

5 more stars and one with the solid rectangles all waiting to be pressed. That is 7 new stars with the 2 from Tuesday and I have 23 blocks already sewn for a total of 30.  They are 9" blocks so what I have done would make a small quilt 45" x 54".  I'm going to make more stars though because I have lots of the solid color triangles already cut.  I might put all 30 of the blocks up on the design wall today to see how they look together.  The star blocks won't all be novelty ...

28 blocks......... from Exuberant Color

Most of the fabrics in this solids with prints quilt will be novelty or conversation prints.  Occasionally I will fill in with another type to pull in a color that I think is missing.  The blocks will finish at 7" so I have a lot more blocks to make.  I think maybe this one will be 6 x 9, 54 blocks and would be 42" x 63" and it would be a small throw quilt.  My other thought is maybe this one will have a border.

I will be making blocks for 2 other quilts in the series too, cutting ...

And 4 more blocks............ from Exuberant Color

I haven't pressed the blocks from yesterday or Sunday yet.  I know I'll have the iron on today so I'll press them and show all 28 blocks together tomorrow.  I need to cut some more solid rectangles in darker colors before I sew any more blocks.

As I'm writing this we are expecting storms to roll through all night and rain most of the day today.  Our area is predicted to get over and inch and a half of rain.  I hope we exceed that.

4 blocks.......... from Exuberant Color

I cut 4 more blocks for one of my ongoing solids with prints quilts.  It was fun to sew up these prints a friend sent to me.

We finally got some rain yesterday morning, a little over 1".  The predicted rain for the evening didn't materialize by the time I went to bed.  More rain expected in the next couple days so I hope we get some of it.  Also a nice cool week predicted which means a nicer electric bill next month.

Progress report........ from Exuberant Color

I worked on kits for my Colorwash360 students yesterday so I didn't do any sewing. The class will start mid-September so I need to keep working on the kits.  So I decided to put all of these blocks up on the design wall for a progress report.  I need 80 blocks so I am 1/4 of the way there.  I need to cut some of my Charley Harper fabrics for this one.

Today is supposed to be the hottest day we have had all summer.  Our cool front is predicted for Friday night but that could be affected ...

5 blocks.............. from Exuberant Color

5 more blocks for an ongoing project.  I was cleaning off one of the tables and this group of fabric was laying there waiting to be cut for these blocks.

I pulled some fabrics for candidates for the border of the bow tie quilt but haven't auditioned them yet.  Hopefully that decision will be made today and I can complete the top.

Outside I have been cutting down the peonies a little each evening.  Last year I left them for October and then we got a lot of rain and then it got really cold and snow.  I will ...

Solids with prints............... from Exuberant Color

I haven't forgotten about my solids with prints quilts.  I finished 3 of them and have 3 others in progress, this being one of them.  I spent a lot of time in the basement studio yesterday so I cut the print pieces for these 4 blocks.  I will cut a few pieces for the other two this week too.

It was a beautiful day yesterday with a nice north breeze occasionally.  I haven't baked for a long time so I mixed Kringla dough which has to be chilled and then chocolate chip cookie dough which I baked.  I ...

Finishing another................. from Exuberant Color

I had an end of roll piece of batting 127" long so I decided to find 2 quilts that would fit on it.  This was the first one I cut off a piece for.  The other one that fit was the African 16 patch which probably won't get quilted any time soon.
I quilted this one in loops.  It took me over an hour to figure out a problem with bobbin tension so just because I own a longarm it doesn't mean it is fast magic to get one quilted (but I wish it was!).

This is the ...

17 blocks................. from Exuberant Color

The next batch of jewel tone 16 patch blocks were completed yesterday.  There are 2 each of the 6 shown here.  I now have 34 blocks complete for this quilt.

I decided to sew some blocks in the solids and print series.  I sewed 5 star blocks to add to the 17 finished that were in the box.  I have all of the solid color triangles cut for the rest of the blocks.  Now I just need to find the print fabrics I want to add.

First quilt top finish for May 2020................ from Exuberant Color

Last seams are sewn.  All that is left is staystitching around the outside edge so the stitching doesn't pop on the seam ends.  It is 64.5" x 80".  As I look at the photo I'm wondering if I should move the alternate fabric block at the lower left into the bottom row since there isn't one in that row.

I picked a little bouquet since a freeze warning was in effect last night.

Six more masks were sewn while I watched TV last night.

Sewing the long seams.......... from Exuberant Color

I forgot to take a photo of the final layout until after I started sewing rows together.
In this photo all of the rows have been sewn together and now I'm sewing the long crosswise seams.

It was getting late so I quit after 3 rows were sewn together.  I'll finish it today.

I got my order of black 1/8" elastic and I ended up making 9 masks yesterday.

These are the Redbuds that planted themselves along my driveway several years ago.  That is my neighbor's garbage can.  I didn't figure I could ask him ...
